<em>In 2019, the problem of burnout at work was officially recognized by the World Health Organization as a professional phenomenon arising as a result of “chronic stress workplace that has not been successfully managed.”</em> <em>After 5 years, the state and business have not joined forces to fight with this phenomenon.</em> <em>That's why New York doesn't have an industry to combat burnout at work.</em> <em>This is more bad than good for all of us.</em> <strong>Burnout at work hits New Yorkers</strong> In one study, New York ranked 17th in the world and 3rd in the United States in terms of the intensity of population “burnout”. <strong>(1)</strong> However, another source estimates the situation is not so pessimistic and puts the city at the bottom of the ranking of American cities. <strong>(2)</strong> As always, the truth is in the middle. There really is a problem. And the scale of this problem allows the NYC Department of Health <strong>(3)</strong> and NYPD <strong>(4)</strong> to devote special news releases to “burnout.” These publications offer city residents specific advice on how to avoid “burnout” and provide telephone numbers to call for help. Great initiative from the city authorities! However, helping victims at taxpayers' expense is a necessary, although not the most effective, way to combat “burnout”. Like any other problem, it is better to prevent it than to eliminate its consequences. Of the four known types of burnout in New York City, job “burnout” is the most common. <strong>(5)</strong> This means that employers are directly responsible for the occurrence of the problem and possible further costs to taxpayers for solving the problem “burnout”. The reduction or even absence of “burnout at work” becomes a sign of success and great social responsibility of the business. This view of success is primarily beneficial to the owner of the enterprise. Since, according to the study, burnt out employees have 37% higher absenteeism, 18% lower productivity and 15% lower profitability. <strong>(6)</strong> Because of this, a third of the annual salary of such an employee is unjustified. <strong>(7)</strong> This makes it possible to look at the problem from an alternative point of view. Combating “burnout at work” can be a great area for investment and innovation! It is a reasonable decision of the authorities to support this. However, so far employers are struggling with this problem on their own without the help of specialized companies whose work is regulated legislation and supported by the government. That's not all. Fighting “burnout at work” is not necessary! There is no law that would force businessmen to do this. This is done voluntarily by some businessmen. <strong>How New York businessmen protect employees from burnout</strong> The main emphasis is on various social support for employees. People are offered free lunches, reimbursement for commuting, fully funded health, dental, and vision plans, child benefits and much more. Among the unusual support measures, “3 flexible work modes” by Better Mortgage <strong>(</strong><strong>8</strong><strong>)</strong> or “personal annual budget for professional development” by Cardflight stand out. <strong>(9</strong><strong>)</strong> “We give a substantial cash bonus if you refer a friend or former colleague who subsequently joins our team,” notes the TodayTix website. <strong>(</strong><strong>10</strong><strong>)</strong> This is one of the few cases when existing employees can earn money by increasing the company's staff. And the Casper company offers its employees "Unlimited paid time off". <strong>(1</strong><strong>1</strong><strong>)</strong> However, in some cases, employees are protected from burnout not only by social support but also by original marketing ideas that improve the business. As a rule, such decisions are unusual for their industries. For example, Babbo Ristorante has a "FAQ" section on its website. This decision, atypical for restaurants, allowed the management of the establishment to greatly reduce the workload on employees. “In general, this section was designed based on questions guests have frequently asked either over the phone or when arriving at the restaurant. If the questions are more specific and asked less frequently, they can be answered by either host staff or a manager. Either over the phone or in person",- said Floor Manager at Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca, Stephen Thomas Kirschner. In addition to marketing solutions, technical innovations can be used. New York City (NYC) Transit does it. <strong>(1</strong><strong>2</strong><strong>)</strong> The company is considering the ability to protect bus drivers with a full-fledged barrier made of special glass. Since 2017, drivers are protected from the public zone. However, this barrier is not effective. This creates discomfort and danger for drivers. Every month 3 drivers are attacked. Another 19 drivers report being harassed each week. These and other conditions make the driving profession a very dangerous one. As a result, for drivers there is a "risk of death from mental, psychoneurotic and personality disorders" is 2.5-3.6 times more than for ordinary people. <strong>(1</strong><strong>3</strong><strong>)</strong> The installation of a full-fledged glass barrier can significantly reduce the psychological burden on drivers. Two buses with such barriers have now been produced. This transport is being tested. “Keeping bus operators and customers safe is paramount to NYC Transit's North Star,” said NYC Transit President Richard Davey. <strong>Results</strong> As we see, social support, marketing measures and technical innovations are thrown into the battle against “burnout at work.” However, among this arsenal we do not see the main weapon. This weapon is a political decision. Over the past 10 years, New York State has invested $800 million to accelerate innovation. <strong>(1</strong><strong>4</strong><strong>)</strong> Among the goals on which the money was spent there is no fight against “burnout at work.” The authorities are not helping businessmen develop innovative solutions to combat this problem. Each commercial company protects its employees independently. Although reducing this phenomenon is in the interests of the state. Since this will reduce taxpayer expenses and increase budget revenues through business prosperity. The targeted development and implementation of innovations by specialized companies can have a greater effect than the independent struggle of employers with this phenomenon. However, politicians don't think so yet. But businessmen are not trying to get support from the authorities in this area. As a result, the birth of a new economic sector is delayed or may not occur at all. <strong>Check List</strong> 1) https://www.sleepjunkie.com/cities-with-highest-burnout/ 2) https://withinhealth.com/explore-articles/united-states-of-burnout 3) https://www.nyc.gov/assets/doh/downloads/pdf/covid/covid-19-burnout.pdf 4) https://www.nyc.gov/assets/nypd/downloads/pdf/employee-relations/eau/burnout.pdf 5) https://withinhealth.com/explore-articles/united-states-of-burnout 6)https://news.gallup.com/reports/178514/state-american-workplace.aspx https://www.forbes.com/sites/karlynborysenko/2019/05/02/how-much-are-your-disengaged-employees-costing-you/?sh=5b46f4ef3437 7) https://www.linkedin.com/business/learning/blog/learner-engagement/how-to-calculate-the-cost-of-employee-disengagement 8) https://better.com/about-us/careers 9) https://www.cardflight.com/careers 10) https://www.todaytixgroup.com/careers 11) https://casper.com/corporate-jobs.html 12) https://new.mta.info/press-release/mta-testing-new-features-buses-enhance-operator-and-customer-safety 13) https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1917241/ 14) https://www.nyserda.ny.gov/All-Programs/Innovation-at-NYSERDA/Innovate-in-New-York
