Top Features of a Quality Ceiling Fan

The ceiling fan is a very important and common appliance for residential and commercial properties. Most of the rooms in houses and offices have a ceiling fan. There are some essential features which should not be neglected to purchase high-quality ceiling fans. The various important features have been discussed here.

Size

The ideal size of the ceiling fan depends upon the size of the room it needs to sweep. The number of blades in a ceiling fan is also dependent upon the area of sweep. Usually, a ceiling fan has 2,3 4 or 5 blades. The area of sweep ranges from 900mm to 1400mm. A ceiling fan of 1200mm size is ideal for a room measuring 100-130 square feet while a ceiling fan of 1400mm size is ideal for a room measuring 130-150 square feet. For rooms with sizes more than 150 square feet, 1400mm ceiling fans are ideal. In the case of small rooms measuring less than 75 square feet, ceiling fans of 900mm size are sufficient.

Blade pitch

The amount of air moved by the ceiling fan depends upon its blade pitch. Higher the blade pitch, the greater is the amount of air moved by the fan. The best ceiling fans have a pitch ranging between 12 and 15 degrees. Flat blades are not suitable for ceiling fans because flat blades do not help in air movement.

Drop rod

Drop rods of the best ceiling fans are at a sufficient distance from the floor and not very close to the ceiling. The size of the drop rod depends upon the height of the ceiling. For example, a drop rod about 48 inches is suitable for a ceiling located at 13 feet from the floor. The correctly sized drop rod ensures that the blades are at a minimum of 2-3 feet away from the ceiling and at least 1 feet away from the side walls of the room.

Motor

Modern high-quality ceiling fans are equipped with high-performance and low-energy-consuming motors. Thus, such ceiling fans perform well without significantly increasing the electricity bill. The modern ceiling fan motors are brushless DC motors which make much less noise as compared to traditional ball-bearing motors. The modern ceiling fan motors also have sealed bearings which eliminate the need to lubricate them regularly for best performance.

Airflow

Airflow is measured in cubic feet per minute. It denotes the amount of air that is displaced by the ceiling fan per unit of time. The good quality ceiling fans have CFM ranges between 4000-5000 while the best grade ceiling fans exhibit more than 6000 CFM.

Lighting options

High-quality ceiling fans also double up as a light source due to the lighting units integrated into them. Many types of lighting options such as LED, Fluorescent and Halogen are available for ceiling fans with lights.
